What are Chaordic Organizations?
Chaordic organizations are man-made or naturally occurring collections of constituents exhibiting emergent order and chaotic behavior at the same time.
What are some examples of Chaordic Organization?
The Internet is an example of chaordic behavior. There is no over-arching control and at any given time, any number of internet nodes might be up or down; many permanently removed and many more being added every second. Yet, there is an emergent order that is observable - we do not see the internet going down, information is readily searchable and available; useful applications abound for many human needs.
Are there people organizations that exhibit such behavior?
Yes - maybe not to the fullest potential because a human being is a complex participant in a larger collaborative. The Social aspect of a human being plays an increasingly important role in organizations - and hence human organizations are more difficult to realize the full potential of Chaordic behavior.
However, the company - Visa, under the leadership of DeeHock was an exemplar of such behavior.
Another example is Ricardo Semler's company : ricardo semler@google http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricardo_semler
Yet another example is Gore-tex. See gore-tex@google and its description of their culture here : http://www.gore.com/en_xx/aboutus/
