Many are familiar with IT work environments where little time is available for long term mentoring. Perhaps it is because the necessary series of engaged interactions are tenuous and too infrequent for good effect in time pressured circumstances. The result has been many fewer reports of effective long term mentoring. The mentor student relationship tends to die out like an untended garden Here is a paper describing the scenario in detail.
